The Watertown-Jefferson County Area Transportation Council (“WJCTC”) has announced the first public meeting for their Safe Routes to School Study.
WJCTC, the area’s designated Metropolitan Planning Organization, initiated the Safe Routes to School Study this summer with the aim of improving connections between residential communities and schools, parks, and other community assets.
To date, the project team has reached out to key stakeholders in the region, including school district officials, to gain an understanding of the needs and opportunities for pedestrian and bicyclist safety within the study area. The study is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2025 and will include recommendations for bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements in Watertown and adjacent communities such as Dexter, Brownville, Evans Mills, and Carthage.
The consulting team for the project includes Barton & Loguidice who will provide engineering and technical expertise as well as Highland Planning, who will direct the public engagement process.
The meeting, which was postponed from December due to inclement weather, will be held on Wednesday, January 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be a brief presentation at 6:00 p.m., followed by a questions and answers session. After the Q&A session, there will be an open house, where attendees can interact with the project team. Attendees are encouraged to drop in anytime between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
