Region 7 at a Glance

DOT's North Country region is the largest in the State, covering 8,643 square miles in a five-county area. The employees in Region 7 plan, design, construct, maintain, and administer the State Transportation System. The population of the region has increased to roughly 400,000 due to the military expansion at Fort Drum and the additional State prison population from 13 new correctional facilities in the five-county area. There are three cities in the region, the largest of which is Watertown. The primary mode of travel is by automobile. The State highway network includes 3,250 lane miles of streets and highways, and 400 State bridges.
